Happy Labor Day!

Some quick things.

I need a few connections at the Fashion Institute of Technology, and actually any fashion institute in the United States for that matter.

Do you know someone that owns a small business? I am looking for any product, be it a food item, hats, clothes, home decor, jewelry, arts and crafts! Please send me an email at bennett.daryl@gmail.com or comment here and let's talk! I would love to hear about it!

Enjoy the day!

Pulling Out the Entprepreneur 08/21/2010

There's a project I am starting, and I think it will be a great device if it catches on. Companies have employees pushing more and more products, like 7-11 asking if you'd like a taquito, coffee shops suggesting a larger size for 30 cents, CVS trying to push batteries, hand sanitizer, gummy bears, so on. I recently heard of a company encouraging competition to see which cashier can increase his or her average transaction sales total the most, where the winner will receive $25, likely in a gift card to the store. So if a company has 1000 stores with 10-20 employees each and the overall average increase in sales total is $1 for 100 transactions a day... well, it adds up (keep them at minimum wage though).

I've been looking into idea exchanges and the ones I find are predominantly technology related. I've seen some more geeky than others, where one will find the occasional discussion about how the planet can be eliminated. Others focus on smartphones, their applications, and developers.

I would like to set up a system that will allow individuals to discuss their ideas and brainstorm for projects, innovation, business. Maybe an individual has been unemployed for several months and finds another individual and the two create a company. I hear people say that a certain product or service should exist all the time. I suppose I'm just trying to pull out the entrepreneur that is in each of us.

I grabbed this from Scott Bradley on Facebook, a nice list of Google's Biggest Flops and Failures.

Anyway, I'll be setting it up soon and will keep you posted. Any suggestions? Please comment dow

Until next time.

Daryl

Saying Hi and Catching Up 08/21/2010

It has been a busy year thus far, and I am starting to see the end of the tunnel. I've been at my new job for about a month, and find it enjoyable- plus the pay is better and the schedule is stable. Started a new gym membership at a much more convenient location, so I am excited for that as well.

I think about the Kindle often, especially with the price drop when Apple's Ipad came out ( I'll write a nice article about Steve Jobs and Apple later). I subscribe to the Wall Street Journal, and am on the fence to drop the print and just subscribe via Kindle for convenience. The only thing keeping me from such action is the price (although I think an extra $60 a year is worth it, just getting it through Wifi and eliminating the hassle of turning pages, wasting paper, folding, so on). Although I do have a thing for cutting out articles...

My cousin actually posted about the idea of the Kindle and e books from a different perspective and I enjoyed it, so check it out.

We Are Back in Business 04/03/2010

Hello everyone.

First, I must apologize for my absence. I was studying for the first Actuary exam for several weeks, and I would not sacrifice the time for a blog post (or really do anything besides work and study, for that matter). Unfortunately, I must retake the exam, and I hope to have a more balanced life while preparing

With the coming of nice weather here in Huntington, New York (something like 60 degrees, but I found it just delightful) and the free time, I went for the first bike ride of the year, about 15 miles on 85% inflated tires. 15 down, 2485 to go. Hopefully by week's end, I can go on one or two longer rides.

I look forward to posting again in the near future.

Enjoy the weekend.

A Pretty Neat Baseball Stat Site 01/22/2010

I would greatly prefer not discussing sports here, but I just found a site called Last 30 that I enjoy entirely too much. It allows you to easily look at offensive statistics for batting average, slugging, and on base percentage for the last 30 at bats, last 30 games, or the entire season. You can look at league leaders, or focus on the outfield of a selected team.

For example, I wanted to compare the statistics of the 2010 Anaheim Angels' outfielders, so I looked at the 2009 season. With Vlad Guerrero heading to Texas and Gary Matthews Jr. heading to the Mets, I think Anaheim can add a very effective bat to their lineup. So hypothetically speaking, I think Johnny Damon would be a pretty nice addition.

Damon-L
Aybar-Switch
Abreu-L
Hunter-R
Matsui-L
Morales-Switch
Napoli-R
Kendrick-R
Izturis-Switch

Anyway, back to the website. It's good that you can so easily switch between the three statistics (for example, if a player has 20 singles in 40 at bats, it is a .500 BA and .500 slugging. If a player has 5 hits that are all home runs in 40 at bats, it is a .125 BA and a .500 slugging.).Then OBP, on base percentage, shows how likely a player will reach base safely.

So that is what I quickly wanted to share. Really just the webs

CVS Has the Wrong Idea 01/13/2010

Picture

The other day, I received a few coupons connected with my CVS Extracare card. I find these programs fascinating, essentially saying that the company will exchange the data regarding your purchases for X amount of dollars in coupons, including CVS's 2% back in "Extrabucks". Data Mining. Statistics. A statistical analysis of one's day to day spending habits. How marketing affects sales. However you would like to look at it.

Anyway, I found these recent coupons funny, and wanted to share them with you. Again, I am a 23 year old male, with no plans of children any time soon. I think the company confused me with a 30 year old mother. To be honest, I can't recall anything that would be mistaken as a baby product (I've purchased chalk and play-doh, but that does not count.).

Hope you see the humor in this as well!

    Daryl Bennett

I am a college graduate living on Long Island, New York. As of now, I do not have an immediate focus for my future blog entries, but I will briefly state my interests and goals here.

    Interests:
I am interested in applied mathematics, education, networking, economics, statistics, regression analysis, the internet, finance, computer applications, test driving various automobiles, data mining, social psychology, entrepreneurship, creativity and on.

    Goals:
The primary goal of this blog is to create a collection of tidbits, paragraphs and select media that accurately portray Daryl Bennett. I aim to make 1 to 3 posts per week, with a target length of 250 to 400 words. However, I plan to delve much further into select topics on occasion.
Next, as mentioned above, education is a major interest to me, and I appreciate it in any form. That being said, I hope to educate readers and offer useful advice, and would greatly appreciate any constructive criticism from anyone, especially if it can improve my abilities to do so.
I plan on creating several lists that will be posted for all to see. Lists of vocabulary, completed books, immediate and long term goals, to name a few. This will create accountability and will allow me to better visualize my progression as an individual and give me a more logistical perspective for the future.
